It is accepted that there are things in life that you just do not mess with. Chuck Norris and Velociraptors being two very good examples of these.
Im going to say that Bruichladdich 10 is one of my all time favourites, a great example of a single malt whisky. Its always been on my ‘not to be messed with list’ because , well, because why would you? Its brilliant.
At a recent tasting I encountered a 12 year old Bruichladdich, cask strength (60.3% abv) finished in an Oloroso sherry cask. (Specially coopered for this bottling, no less)
I love Bruichladdich. I love sherry cask whiskies. However, still sceptical I poured a glass…
Darkness! Bruichladdich 12 Year Old Oloroso Cask Finish
This is perhaps one of the most balanced cask strength whiskies I have tried, at a shade over 60% it goes down smoothly. The sherried sweetness and the coastal salinity are matched perfectly. One of the few cask strength whiskies I wouldn’t even add the slightest water to.
On the nose its got a lovely sherry note, possibly wood or perhaps tobbaco lingers over a classic mild coastal tone.
The palate is so smooth, massive mouthfeel, alternating between deep sherry in all its fruitiness, and a lovely, subtle brine.
The finish fades slowly from sweet to savoury. A very long and tasty finish. Still no burn from the high ABV. Smooth.
I would never advise you to slap Chuck Norris nor for that matter to attempt to wrestle a velociraptor.
I would however recommend you try to find a bottle of this. Sadly stock seems gone but sample sizes are avaliable here.
They do however still have a PX cask matured version, avaliable here.
