Wemyss Tasting – Part 1 of 4 – The Hive

Last Wednesdays live tasting of Wemyss Malts new range of blended malt whiskies was great fun to participate in, even better was the chance to try 4 of their range. I will be posting notes on all four this week.

First up…The Hive

The Hive, Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, 46% abv
 (available here)

On the nose there is sweet floral honey, orange and apple notes with a subtle underlying spice. The palate is, again, floral and sweet with baked apples in beeswax honey. There is a much bigger mouthfeel than expected here, a slight oily feel. Its almost very creamy, like buttered toast and seville orange marmalade. On the finish the sweetness fades to leave some pleasant spice notes, mild cinnamon and allspice.

This was a surprise for me as I wasnt expecting much, many more levels of taste and for such a light dram a lot going on. Much more going on here than I expected. Masterfully blended.

Next up? The Spice King…
