I’ve had this sample kicking around for a while and was a pleasant surprise whilst rummaging through the sample box that I found it. I was impressed with some of Claxtons other bottlings (a Tobermory and a Tomatin ) so hopes are high for this to be another fine dram. Auchroisk is a dram I have encountered several times but ony the official bottlings so its time to see what and indie can offer…
Auchroisk 25 y.o, IB (Claxtons), 51.7% abv, press sample, (available here)
On the nose its fruity (mostly peachy) with some rather nice floral, perfumed notes and the faintest hint of ripe melon. The palate continues with melon, pineapple and peach along with pine needles and oak. It does feel thin in the mouth and quite light. The finish is oaky and fruity but with the addition of water brings out pleasant sherbert and melon notes.
Sometimes I feel the need to add a little water to a dram. In reality when I review a product I always try with and without water to get a full understanding of the taste, quite often I will almost overwater just to see what happens. I really did feel this was a little spiky without being diluted slightly.
This reatails at just under £100. That always sounds a lot for a whisky but its rare to find a 25 year old at this price point. Claxtons are very much making a good reputation for quality and value. Looking forward to what they release next
